Fragmentation of Christ: The Descent into Denominationalism

LMV: Welcome to Pearlpod. I'm your host, Leigh Murphy Verere. Lines have been drawn, and walls have been built. The Church’s unity was fractured when our labels and divisions became more important than our shared faith! My co-host, Adams Joseph is present as always.

Adams: Hi beloved. Today, we dive into ‘’Fragmentation of Christ: The Descent into Denominationalism,’’ exposing the damage of our labels, and exploring the devastating consequences of a Church more focused on differences than unity.

LMV: Denominationalism is another of Satan’s deft blows to the body of Christ. It emerged from the historic great schisms resulting from differing interpretations and practices, especially from the sale of indulgences.

Adams: You mean an attempt to correct the drifts snowballed into deeper apostasy.

LMV: Yes. The way to hell, they say, is paved with good intentions. Different denominations meant different brands of Christianity, opening the door to unhealthy competition amongst the various brands.

Adams: Exactly. The culture of Churches, prioritizing their distinctive identities, causing severe fragmentation within the body has long since come to say.

Adams: It wasn’t long before Christians ceased being perfectly joined together in the same mind, and we stopped speaking the same thing.

LMV: This is because denominationalism unleashed three dragons on us, namely: ‘Sectarianism’ ‘Exclusivism,’ and ‘Pride.’

Sectarianism is one of the consequences of this dominant tendency for distinctive identities. It’s a mindset that prioritizes the interests of one’s sect over others, often fostering hostility and intolerance, engendering a proliferation of self-appointed leaders.

Adams: Did it not also engendered social fragmentation of the Church leading to spiritual weakness and the undermining of unity and cooperation among believers?

LMV: It did. It promoted doctrinal confusion and an atmosphere of lack of accountability.

The second ‘dragon’ is ‘exclusivism.’ This is an "us versus them" mentality when belonging to a particular sect becomes the sole determinant of salvation or spiritual validity.

Adams: Yes, situations where one’s sects and interpretations are looked upon by others as inferior or even heretical is a present phenomenon. Cooperation and unity amongst all Christians have remained hindered because of denominational loyalty.

LMV: Yeah, you just hinted on the last ‘dragon,’ ‘Pride.’ Denominational affiliations created a sense of superiority. As we began to believe our sect was greater and the only best representation of Christianity, we belittled other denominations and interpretations. We assumed our group had all the answers. We focused on differences rather than shared beliefs.

Adams: Why have we failed to recognize these manifestations as transgressions, despite they have, obviously weakened our strength as members of the body of Christ?

LMV: Predominantly, we’ve failed to prioritize the basic Christian doctrine, as it is written: ‘If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? We’d rather focus on our differences, deluded by our superiority over others, rather than common shared core beliefs.

Adams: And we have, by so doing, promoted an evangelical culture of winning people to our groups rather than to Christ.

LMV: We have, therefore, installed barriers to fellowship and collaboration among all believers, opening the door to misinterpretation and manipulation of Scripture, leaving us with an unwillingness to learn from one another.

Adams: Had the Church been committed to its organic structure and recognized the anti-Christ’s treacherous handiwork, the differences could have been approached with humility and love resulting in greater insights and stronger bonds.

LMV: You’re quite correct. We must restore the Chursh’s authentic foundations. Hear ye the word of the Lord: “I have long time holden my peace… now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once,” says the Lord God [Isa 42:14].

Adam: Aren’t we ordained as the light of the world!

LMV: Of course, we are. We must prove our purpose and build a world where every man is his brother’s keeper. We, therefore, must reinvent the Spirit-led community Church model where everyone can experience spiritual revelation and growth.

The organic Church model offers opportunities to build bridges and foster a common understanding based on Biblical Truths rather than acquiesced human interpretations.

Adams: The time is now when we must reject our disjointed faith journeys and broken relationships in Christ, and be courageous to cast out those things that divide us.

Wow! All so soon we’ve come to the end of yet another exciting journey.

LMV: Before we go we need you to join us in prayer, praying fervently in tongues for the unity of the body of Christ, humility to embrace the truth and the outpouring of the Spirit.

Tune in next time for another inspiring encounter. In the next episode on Pearlpod, we'll explore “The Commodification of Christ: The Evolution into Commercialism.” Don’t miss it!

LMV: Remember that our goals are to redeem the Church, return her to authentic organic communities, and restore true spirituality!
